History of Mathematics at St Andrews


Our student, Kamilla Rekvenyi's, essay on Paul Erdös, which won the 2018 BSHM undergraduate essay prize, is now available online ahead of publication in the British Journal for the History of Mathematics.

Professor Danny Otero from Xavier University, Cincinnati will be visiting us from January to April 2019, supported by the Edinburgh Mathematical Society.

Dr Daniel J. Mitchell, from the University of Aachen, will be visiting for a week at the end of April 2019, supported by the London Mathematical Society.

6-8 July 2020, St Andrews will be hosting the joint meeting of the British Society for the History of Mathematics and Canadian Society for History and Philosophy of Mathematics/La Société Canadienne d'Histoire et de Philosophie des Mathématiques.

History of Mathematics

St Andrews is a renowned centre for the study of the History of Mathematics.

The group is based in the School of Mathematics and Statistics, and runs the well-known MacTutor History of Mathematics website

St Andrews runs a popular undergraduate course on the History of Mathematics. There is also a more advanced course which can be taken by MMaths and MPhil students.
